Edinburgh University denies treating English students as a 'cash cow'

One of Scotland’s most eminent universities has denied treating English students as a “cash cow” despite offering them more places than their Scottish peers for the first time.

Edinburgh University has so far offered 4,996 English applicants a place, more than double last year’s total, after SNP ministers allowed them to charge school leavers from the rest of the UK £36,000 for a degree.

Although there has also been a large increase in the number of Scots offered a place, the English total is higher for the first time in the institution’s 429-year history.

The National Union of Students (NUS) said the figures showed the university was “shamefully putting profit before the interests of its students.”

U.S in Libya: Get shot by your own bullets
22 mar  |  By Sean Maguire

There are few people in this world who would defend Gaddafi as a sane and viable leader of Libya; but I think there would be even less that would see the logic in the U.S selling guns to someone as psychotic as him and then parading about as world police.

It's the equivalent of a sheriff giving an outlaw a six-shooter and then acting surprised when he starts popping off the town folk.

The second one U.S plane gets shot down by one U.S surface-to-air missile, all the military big wigs should get together and make a decision once and for all - "we have to stop shooting at tyrants we've given guns to".

What do you think about Libya? What do you think about the obvious contradictions in U.S foreign policy and how do you think they should be addressed? Tell us and remember...Disqus!  . . read more

GET READY UK: March 26th - The Day We Fight Back!
23 mar  |  It might seem a bit nostalgic to put this up, but here is a stirring speech by a Socialist Revolution activist with images of past struggles and the results of poverty lain over the top. While the ideas of socialism might have been widely discredited in recent years few would argue that society seems to be heading in the right direction in the UK. There needs to be a change and every idea needs to be considered. Socialist Revolution write:

"On 26th March the protests are coming to the UK. THIS IS GOING TO BE BIG! Change you CAN believe in. A huge demonstration of the whole working class movement, the trade unions, youth and communities suffering cuts will take place on 26 March. The march will certainly see hundreds of thousands -- perhaps over a million people take to the streets of London. The importance of this demonstration cannot be overemphasised."

Will you be attending the protest? What do you think about the ideas shown in the video? Tell us and remember... Disqus! . . read more
