Abbott says "sink or swim, or do both"
Tony Abbott has released a radical plan to combat the asylum seeker crisis by proposing to send all boats, regardless of their seaworthiness, back to Indonesia.

Abbott in a prepared statement said, "I was inspired by Split Enz."

"The band tell a story, entitled ‘Six Months on a Leaky Boat,' of a man who survived a full half a year on a sinking vessel."

"If we can replicate that achievement there shouldn't be a problem."

The UNCHR has hit back at the proposal saying it breeches international law.

A UN representative said, "We would expect Mr. Abbott to follow the long-held precedent of giving us the asylum seekers to wallow for decades in refugee camps without any chance of resettlement."

"That is the law after all."

Abbott leaves mothers in the cold- by Kara Jensen-Mackinnon
10 mar  |  Once again Tony Abbott has come out of the political woodwork with a new idea that:

  1. Is stupid and
  2. Goes against his previous promises as a leader.

Tony Abbott is trying to relight the dwindling flame of his woman support by proposing a six month paid maternity leave, which in itself is a fantastic idea.

The problem is the bill will be foot by a fairly large tax of 1.7% on all middle to large businesses that earn in excess of $5mil a year.

Apart from the fact that Abbott promised there would be no new taxes if he were to become leader, most of these large multimillion-dollar businesses already have paid parental leave schemes for their employees in place and by this new tax would be put out millions of dollars more to pay for everyone else.

Interestingly, Australia is one of the only Western countries that doesn't have a governmental parental leave programme already in place, which reflects poorly on us as a progressive nation.

Perhaps we should take a leaf out of Norway's book - where each Norwegian is taxed 0.01% and is rewarded with 46 weeks off at 100% of their wage or 56 at 80%, and the father MUST take at least 10 weeks off.

Why didn't Australia get the memo? . . read more

Parable of the unwelcome strangers
21 jun  |  The year is 2001. You live in a large sharehouse on the south side of town. The place has millions of rooms and people are always coming and going. One day a stranger knocks on the door. Labor Party tell Australia 'Don't Go Back' with Abbott
1 dec  |  Having signed up to the Labor party's e-newsletters I've been receiving information on policies, 'informal' videos Rudd has made, and grandiose visions for the future. Today though there was a significant change in tone with the video below. Instead of considered and convivial, it is brutal and singular with the idea that Abbott is a dinosaur and a destructive force to a progressive Australia. The low image quality and speedy release would tell us this video has been made quickly. What's the rush? Is this because Abbott is a real threat to Rudd? Or just to the ETS? And how badly do they want Abbott dead and buried?  . . read more
Rudd Offers Gaddafi Asylum:
26 aug  |  After feeling slighted at not being able to include Australia in the NATO operation to protect Libyan civilians, Rudd has blasted Australia into the international limelight by offering asylum to Colonel Gaddafi. When questioned on the life that Gaddafi might lead downunder, Rudd was upfront: "He will be stripped of all wealth, living as a regular citizen. To this end, his first priority is to find share accommodation. I have directed him to Gumtree."- By Lincoln Daw  . . read more
Kicking a silly Abbott
13 may  |

by David Michael

It takes a very brave politician to stand up and oppose a tax on mining super profits and say it's ''the issue on which the election now turns''. A very brave or stupid politician.

For one, mining magnates such as Clive Palmer are hardly endearing characters, and when they whinge and moan while raking in billions from our minerals, that strained endearment ends.

The second reason is that every time a politician stands up and talks about threats to miner's jobs most people around the country must yawn; only 129,000 people (or 1.3%) of the population are hired by mining and most of them are far away from the cities.

And finally, when Abbott said that this tax "would be robbing Peter to pay Paul" I'm sure most Australians were thinking, yeah, but Peter has a fortune - a lot of which is disappearing out of the country- and Paul only wants decent hospitals, decent schools and a decent pile to live on when he retires.

Phoney Abbott
18 may  |

By Kara Jensen-Mackinnon

There’s a well-known phrase that goes something like – we know that not all liars are politicians, but all politicians are liars.  And after Tony Abbott’s career changing faux pas in an interview with Kerry O’Brian on the 7:30 Report, we can’t help laugh at his proverb proving performance.

He said: “Most of us know when we’re talking to people or when we’re listening to people, I think we know when we can put absolute weight on what’s being said and when it’s just the give and take of standard conversation.”

We all know that politicians often candy-coat the truth, but which citizen votes for a man who outwardly admitted to lying?  If Tony is elected as leader, how many of his policies on health care, education, immigration, the environment were carefully prepared and scripted or just said on the fly?

He’ll probably release a statement saying something along the lines of: he’s an honest man for admitting to lying.  I just hope that stapled to the back of that statement is a spreadsheet with all his policies that were false, so we as a voting public know where we stand.

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -- Ronald Reagan (1986)
