This year’s anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington promises to be one of the more memorable in quite some time. The 47th anniversary of an event is usually not one organizers focus on for a big commemoration but in a few weeks thousands will be in the streets this August 28 commemorating the March on Washington and others will be advancing their own social agenda and publications.

Glenn Beck has called for a national rally on the anniversary of the March on Washington at the exact same location as the historic protest, the Lincoln memorial. The theme of Beck’s rally is “Restoring Honor.” According to Beck’s website this ”celebration of America” is supposed to be non-political but has as its primary guest speaker Sarah Palin and has recently been endorsed by the National Rifle Association. From what I can gather, America can restore its honor by strengthening the virtue of individuals coming to Washington DC to listen to Beck and Palin, and picking up a copy of Beck’s new book “The Plan” which is to be launched at this honorable event.

Now what does this have to do with the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered the “I have a dream speech?” The answer is nothing. Beck has admitted that he had no idea that the date he chose was the same date as the legendary March on Washington but this does not inhibit him from proclaiming it was close to “divine providence” that his rally / book launch converges with such a historic event. Beck now proclaims that he is working “to finish the job” that was at the heart of the 1963 March on Washington and Dr. King’s vision.

According to Beck the ideas of Dr. King have been corrupted and Beck will resurrect the true King. As part of this mission Beck is trying to separate Dr. King from social justice and limit King to advocacy of individual Christian salvation. Beck has even reached out to distant relatives of Dr. King, like Dr. King’s niece. After questioning her several times gets her to say that King was not about social justice or government redistribution of the wealth.

If one wants to advance the legacy of Dr. King one should start off by looking at King’s own writings. Beck might be particularly interested in a speech delivered about 4 months after the March on Washington titled “Social Justice and the Emerging New Era.” Beck should also review the words King spoke to his staff in 1966 where he talked about the need to redistribute wealth in order to advance a juster nation. It appears Beck’s ignorance concerning Dr. King is equal to his ignorance concerning the 1963 March on Washington? Does Beck know that A Phillip Randolph, a union organizer and socialist, originated the idea of the March on Washington ? Does he know that the March on Washington was the March on Washington for Freedom and Jobs, demanding massive federal investment for a government jobs program?

If Glenn Beck sincerely wants to advance the social vision of Dr. King and the March on Washington he should look to Detroit August 28 when Rev. Jesse Jackson, a lead organizer for Dr. King, and the United Auto Workers, which was one of the main sponsors of the 1963 March on Washington, kick off a campaign to rebuild America with Jobs, Justice and Peace. Unlike Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally / book launching, the march in Detroit will echo King’s and most of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement’s call for greater investment in opportunity for the American people. If Beck doesn’t want to leave Washington DC August 28 he should visit the “Celebrate the Dream” event being held not far from Beck’s own rally, where Americans will read and listen to the words of Dr. King in a fitting August 28 tribute. Finally since Beck likes to talk to members of Dr. King’s family he should visit the “Reclaim the Dream” rally that is also being held in DC August 28 where Martin Luther King III will be joining other leaders to make sure King’s social vision is heard in Washington DC on this 47th anniversary.

South Park Burns Beck- by Sean Maguire

2 dec | South Park has long been the most abrasive and most important satire on television. In a recent episode entitled 'Dances with Smurfs'; the genius of Matt Stone and Trey Parker went to a whole new level.

The episode revolves around Eric Cartman (a young Glenn Beck) who takes up the mantle of giving out daily school announcements over the PA. Instead of just reading what's happened or what he's told to, Cartman launches into unsubstantiated attacks on Wendy- the School President.

The genius is that when he's questioned by the authorities- and by his friends- he constantly claims the right to ask questions of Wendy and cites the damage that would happen if he wasn't there to ask them.

A position that can never be argued against- because, as followers of Beck would know- whatever insane propositions are put forward and then found to be dubious, the first amendment right of free speech protects him if his positions are posed as questions.

The satrire goes further when Cartman is taken off the airwaves, causing him to launch more attacks- resulting in the drop-kicks of the school to take up arms against their school and its President.

What amazes me about this episode is how the tools of Glenn Beck are dissected with such simplicity- showing how easy it is for people to get roped into what's being said- and how it easy is for the flames of ignorance to be fanned to uncontrollable levels.

Finally, what should be obvious now is how the kids of South Park that sit back bored while all this is happening and try and take the high-road by ignoring him are just as too blame for Cartman's success.

A startling satire that should be watched by everyone.

But belief in this so-called victory is in keeping with the American tradition of seeing everything that happens in Iraq as being the result of actions by the U.S. alone. The complex political landscape of Iraq is ignored.

U.S. commentators have never quite taken on board that there are not one but three wars being fought out in the country since 2003: the first is the war of resistance against the American occupation by insurgents from the Sunni Arab community. The second is the battle between the Sunni and Shia communities as to who should rule the Iraqi state in succession to Saddam Hussein. The third conflict is a proxy war between the U.S. and Iran to decide who should be the predominant foreign power in Iraq. The real, though exaggerated, fall in violence in Iraq over the last year is a consequence of developments in all three of these wars, but they do not necessarily have much to do with ‘the Surge’. Chinese army general calls for 'decisive action' vs PH

China should launch "decisive action" against the Philippines to reinforce Beijing's claim on the disputed Scarborough Shoal, a hardline Chinese army general said Friday.

People's Liberation Army (PLA) Major General Luo Yuan, in a commentary published by state-owned website china.org.cn, said China has not abandoned the idea of "war at all costs" to protect its interests.

"'Peaceful rise and 'period of strategic opportunity' preclude war," said Luo, who has been described by Western media as "hawkish" for his ultranationalist views.

"It is incorrect to assume that China will completely rule out military action in any event during this 'period of strategic opportunity,'" he said, referring to Beijing's dispute with Manila.

Recently it was announced that Steve Jobs had an FBI file that detailed his personality, how he ran his company and the possibility that he would be appointed to George Bush Sr.' s government.

What is more interesting about Apple at the moment is the $100bn in cash reserves it's accrued and what it might use them for.

End world hunger?

Take over other companies?

Pay its suicidal employees more?

Whatever it chooses, we should really stop focussing on Jobs' genius and start thinking about how the wealth his genius created can be spent for good.

The Future of Trust - From The Outsider

The images of senior Australian politicians being bundled into cars to escape the threat of indigenous demonstrators confirms how weak the post-apology environment is in Australia. The whole point of the apology was not to say 'sorry' but to build a new platform for the positive evolution of indigenous Australians. The apology created a climate of trust but the ignoble inaction that has followed, apart from proposed tinkering with the Australian constitution, has destroyed the platform and the belief in the trustworthiness of political process. Can't we (non-indigenous Australians) actually do something? Something communal not bureaucratic, spiritual not gestural – something that shows that we care.

Abbott says "sink or swim, or do both"

Tony Abbott has released a radical plan to combat the asylum seeker crisis by proposing to send all boats, regardless of their seaworthiness, back to Indonesia.

Abbott in a prepared statement said, "I was inspired by Split Enz."

"The band tell a story, entitled ‘Six Months on a Leaky Boat,' of a man who survived a full half a year on a sinking vessel."

"If we can replicate that achievement there shouldn't be a problem."

The UNCHR has hit back at the proposal saying it breeches international law.

A UN representative said, "We would expect Mr. Abbott to follow the long-held precedent of giving us the asylum seekers to wallow for decades in refugee camps without any chance of resettlement."

"That is the law after all."

Is it such a gamble? From The Outsider

The dithering about whether or not to bring in limitations on how much you can lose on the pokies is just another example of Australian government policy waiting for a leader. Think about smoking. It took until the late 'eighties for governments to grasp the nettle and begin to clamp down on people's freedom to smoke (and kill themselves – if not others). Twenty five years later you wonder why legislation was so slow to come in for a policy that today looks like a no-brainer. Most habitual smokers, like myself, secretly welcomed preventative legislation and I have no doubt that people hooked on the pokies will welcome the social changes that are so long overdue.
