The term social media is deceptive, it suggests a similarity to ‘the media' when really there isn't one.
The media is about investigation and analysis, while social media is about reaction and discussion.
The media breaks a story like the death of Osama and then it virally spreads on Facebook and Twitter; how much did these social media sites add to the story?
Was it a Facebook reporter standing at the press conference listening to Obama?
Was it a Twitter sub-editor desperately trying to collate thirty different rumours into a workable and believable timeline of what happened? Was it a Tumblr blogger that put together that Pakistan's most prestigious military academy was in the same town as Osama?
No, social media was the megaphone to the media's whispers, yet, it's the megaphone we're celebrating and calling the revolution.
